Welcome to a new school year! I've been working on getting the classroom set up and everything ready for the new year. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on Thursday, Sept 1st from 9-10am or 5-6pm. Remember to bring all your supplies. Some materials will go inside your desk, others will be stored away. Parents can sign up for a time slot from 10am-5pm. This will be our Early Conference. We are using Sign Up Genius for scheduling. Click here to sign up now.

And just like that, the life cycle is complete. Unfortunately, we never got to see a Monarch butterfly complete its cycle. The Painted Ladies were the strong ones. Today we let one butterfly go. It's on its way to Mexico! I'm glad the weather was warmer today, with some sun. The butterflies need all the warmth they can get. We have two chrysalises left. I hope they hatch tomorrow... another warm weather day :)
Grandparent's Day was wonderful! The kids put on a great performance. Our room was very crowded with grandparents and special friends. Thank you to everyone that was able to come last Friday. I walked around and took photos of each student with their special visitors. We will be gluing those photos in our First Grade Journal (it's our memory book!) along with a photo of the whole group before the concert. I'll make sure to print out the photos to send home with each student, too.
We learned about Johnny Appleseed during class this week and celebrated by having applesauce this afternoon! YUMMY! Most students thought it was delicious. Instead of calling it homemade applesauce, they were calling it SCHOOLmade applesauce... I thought that was pretty creative! :)
The Painted Lady caterpillars are a little different than the Monarchs. These ones come in a jar. They eat the brown food at the bottom. We don't open the jar until they all form their chrysalis. They will attach to the bottom of the lid. At that point, we take them out and attach each chrysalis to our butterfly net.
We need two containers now because the caterpillars have grown so much. The Painted Lady caterpillars also arrived... photos coming soon :)
We had our first assembly on Friday afternoon. We wanted to kickoff the school year and talk about being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe around Sunnyside. The goal is for students to be respectful, responsible, and safe in each area of the building. Since week one we've been teaching what it looks like for each setting in the building. Students were also reminded about Sunsational Slips and the weekly drawing that happens on the morning announcements. Many students from Irondale High School also came over to show some of the different activities that you can participate in at Irondale. The IHS students talked about how hard work and perseverance help you achieve your dreams! At the end, some of the players from the football team talked about the Homecoming game coming up this Friday and gave out some t-shirts!
Here are the tiny Monarch caterpillars. We have 9. Still waiting on the Painted Ladies... maybe tomorrow!
This fall we will be studying the life cycle of a butterfly. Our Monarch caterpillar eggs arrived last Friday! Here's what they look like: We are also getting Painted Lady caterpillars. They should be arriving sometime this coming week. The students will be keeping an observation journal to track the life cycle progress. We started this last Friday. Check back for more photos soon! :)
The first week was great! The kids are settling into first grade nicely. We did so many things in class related to routines and "getting to know you" activities. I'm excited for this year. On to week two!!!
